Dr. SandersDr. SandersIn his address on March 6th Dr. Sanders conveyed a sense of urgency to do things better and different, with innovation and collaboration.  He referenced Mayor Jackson’s State of the City address in which he identified education as the most critical element affecting the survival of our city.  “Our students are in the fight of their lives…Our success as a school district is a matter of life and death.”

In outlining several accomplishments in 2007 and new initiatives for 2008 and beyond, Dr. Sanders called for a “can do” attitude to address and overcome the challenges.  He quoted Mayor Jackson in stating that we must “run to the fight and not away from it.”

During the question and answer period, several participants identified existing or developing programs as potential means of collaboration. Dr. Sanders urged participants to provide input to his office at: http://www.cmsdnet.net/CMSDintro.htm. Click on “Talk to the CEO” near the top of the page to leave a message.

Gathered to pray for the cityThis year’s community development activities were launched with a prayer gathering January 24th at the Pathways Youth Building on The City Mission campus. Nearly fifty people came together from a wide cross section of churches, nonprofits and other community organizations. Carol Engelbert, Director of the North East Ohio Intercession Network and Mike Nobel, Director of the International House of Prayer provided an overview of their respective ministries.

City Mission graduate Pastor Robert Powell described how his outreach is providing free meals to hundreds of people through the Lonnie Burton Center with the help of numerous urban and suburban churches.

Pastor Powell also is hosting a Pastor’s Summit on February 21 to discuss the breaking down of segregational barriers within the church. The gathering is from 10:30-12:30, at The City Mission, with lunch provided. For more information please contact Pastor Powell at 216-883-1105.
